If you're honestly after friendship, how is being friendly the same as being manipulative? What you're doing sounds like plain old common courtesy. You have to do things with people to become better friends with them. Go out to lunch. See a movie. Go play tennis. Inquire about their interests. Familiarity breeds friendship (usually).
